Flyers legend Bernie Parent passes away at age 80
Bernie Parent, the Hall of Famer considered one of the great goalies of all time who anchored the net for the Philadelphia Flyers' only two Stanley Cup championships during their Broad Street Bullies heyday, has died. He was 80.
The Flyers made the announcement Sunday but provided no immediate details. Parent died overnight in his sleep, said Joe Watson, a star defenseman on the Flyers' Stanley Cup teams.
Parent's steel-eyed stare through his old-school hockey mask landed him on the cover of Time magazine in 1975 when the Flyers reigned as one of the marquee teams in sports. He won Stanley Cup, Conn Smythe and Vezina trophies in back-to-back seasons when the Flyers won the Stanley Cup in 1974 and 1975, the first NHL expansion team to win the championship.
After he made his NHL debut with Boston in 1965, Parent was left unprotected by the Bruins in the 1967 expansion draft and was selected by the Flyers. After 3 1/2 seasons, he was traded to Toronto but ended up back in Philadelphia ahead of the 1973-74 season. He won a league-high 47 games that season and led the NHL in wins again the next season with 44.
He retired with the Flyers in 1979 after 271 wins - 231 of them with the Flyers - over a 13-year career. Parent was accidentally struck in the right eye with a stick in 1979 and was temporarily blinded, forcing him to retire at age 34.
Though he no longer played on the team, Parent stayed active within the Flyers organization, becoming an ambassador for Ed Snider Youth Hockey & Education.
Cleveland Browns defender hit with rough news from the NFL ahead of Week 3 game vs. Green Bay Packers
The Cleveland Browns defense looks more like its 2023 version than its 2024 version through a couple of games so far this season and that’s good news. Cleveland has a couple of tough losses to the defense already with CB Martin Emerson Jr. and LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah not being out there this season due to injury . They’ve had new players step up such as rookies like LB Carson Schwesinger and DT Mason Graham. However, it hasn’t been all good news for young players trying to step up for the Browns.
Browns CB Cameron Mitchell fined by the NFL after tough game vs. Baltimore Ravens
With Cleveland already down Emerson, they have moved Greg Newsome II back outside this season and things have gone mostly well with that move. However, it has challenged Cleveland’s depth, especially in times when they don’t have a player like CB Denzel Ward out there, who had to miss time against Baltimore. Mitchell played 23 snaps as an outside corner for the Browns against the Ravens and gave up three touchdowns during that time. Now, Mitchell has been fined for a play he made against the Baltimore Ravens.
The NFL fined Mitchell $6,191 for a low block he had and it was categorized as unnecessary roughness. The third-year Browns cornerback went low to eliminate the fullback on an outside run by Ravens RB Derrick Henry. There was no flag thrown on the play during the game, it was something that was looked back at afterwards. Mitchell made one tackle against Baltimore, who went his way four times and Mitchell gave up three catches for 40 yards, per Pro Football Focus.
Mitchell was a fifth-round pick by the Browns in 2023 and they’re now looking to push him into a role in 2025 but it’s just not working yet. The Browns' cornerback is playing in his 33rd game with the Browns on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers, who are going to sling the ball around with Jordan Love. Cleveland expects a healthy Ward out there this week, so that could mean Mitchell seeing some time back inside as a slot corner. After a rough game and then being fined, Mitchell could badly use a good showing against Green Bay.
